Montclair, NJ – Two-time All-American basketball forward Melissa Tobie, who led Montclair State to the NCAA Division III Final Four and football All-American C.J. Conway, who helped MSU to the NJAC Championship last Fall, were named Male and Female Outstanding Athletes of the Year, respectively as the Red Hawk Department of Athletics handed out their awards for the 2014-15 academic year.
Tobie and Conway were two of 16 student-athletes honors at the annual All-Sports Banquet held at the Valley Regency in Clifton, NJ on June 2.
Men's Lacrosse All-American Michael Schreck and All-American soccer midfielder Melissa Koster were chosen as the Senior Athletes of the Year with soccer forward Lucas Terci and field hockey goalkeeper Rebecca Brattole earning Junior Athlete of the Year honors. Track and Field standout Rasheed Amilcar, the NJAC Outstanding Outdoor Athlete of the Year, was tabbed as the recipient of the John A. Greco Sophomore Male Athlete of the Year with two-time First-Team All-NJAC volleyball pick Courtney Matlock collecting the female award.
NJAC Rookies of the Year Kyle Goodwin of the men's soccer team and indoor track first-year competitor Jocelyn Anderson were the recipients of the Gerald "Bennie" Benson Freshman Athletes of the Year.
Also honored were senior football wide receiver Matt Grundy and junior swimmer Sydney Stein for the Highest GPA Award in addition to Conway, soccer All-American Jessica Bonjione and field hockey All-American Abby Erler chosen as the Scholar-Athlete Award winners. Senior field hockey defender Joelle Butrico was presented with the James J. Poet Sportsmanship Award.
The department also handed out its Team Academic Achievement Awards to the male and female teams with the highest team cumulative grade-point averages. The football team along with the field hockey squad earned those honors. Field hockey captured the honor for the third straight season while football collected its second award in the last three years. In addition, women's basketball junior Kayla Ceballos was chosen as the recipient of the TALON Award.
