Women's Soccer Tops Springfield in NCAA Division III First Round, 3-0

Red Hawks to Face Messiah on Sunday in Second Round

Grantham, PA - The Montclair State women's soccer team got goals by three different players as the Red Hawks topped Springfield College, 3-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament at Messiah College's Shooemaker Field on Saturday afternoon.

JENNIE HORNSTRA, TYLER MADISON and MARTINA LANDEKA each had goals for the Red Hawks (15-3-2) who advance to Sunday's second round where they will face unbeaten Messiah College (18-0-2) at 1:00 pm. The host Falcons shutout out College of Staten Island 6-0 in the other first round game on Saturday. The winner advances to the NCAA Sectional Tournament next weekend.

MSU, which has made the second round each of the last four years, is looking for its third straight NCAA "Sweet 16" appearance. Last year, Montclair State fell to eventual national champion Lynchburg in the Sectional Semifinal at Shoemaker Field. It will be just the second meeting between MSU and Messiah with both coming in the NCAA Tournament. The Falcons and the Red Hawks played to a scoreless draw in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2004 with Messiah advancing in penalty kicks. Last season the two were in the same pod for the Sectional Tournament.

Montclair State scored twice in the first half outshooting the Pride (11-6-5) 5-2 in the first half. Madison put the Red Hawks on the board wih her 10th goal of the season. Hornstra fired a shot that Springfield keeper Ciara Boucher saved. The defelction came out to Madison who deposited a low shot inside the left post giving the Red Hawks a 1-0 lead.

Goalkeeper ERINNE FINLAYSON made a save five minutes later keeping MSU in front and Montclair would add to the lead in the 25th minute. ERIN SULLIVAN served a ball into the box that Hornstra was able to redirect in for her seventh of the year pushing the Red Hawks advantage to 2-0 at the 24:38 mark. Montclair State would get one more chance to increase its lead however Boucher stopped Hornstra with 13:04 left.

In the second half, the Pride came out firing however Finlayson was up to the task with three saves in the first eight minutes of the period and another at 63:27 on a stop against Elizabeth Monsen. She later denied Julia Cormier in the 68th minute before the Red Hawks put the game away on Landeka's eighth goal of the year - a header on a corner kick feed from KASEY FINN.

Finlayson finished with eight saves as she earned her ninth shutout of the year and the Red Hawks 13th. Montclair State finished with a 12-8 advantage in shots and also took three of the five corner kicks.
